Welcome to the Future of Fremantle Consultation Hub

The Future of Fremantle project is a rare opportunity to re-imagine the future of the Fremantle | Walyalup Inner Harbour port precinct.
It is a visionary exercise to explore what could be achieved at the 260-hectare Inner Harbour precinct (370 hectares including waterways) over  a 50-year planning horizon.

The process has involved extensive engagement with the community and a wide range of stakeholders to understand the opportunities, challenges and aspirations for the future of the precinct.

We are excited that this conversation will continue as we engage on the emerging vision and scenarios for the Future of Fremantle.

Emerging Vision and Future Scenarios

After more than 12 months of intensive consultation, the Future of Fremantle project has developed an emerging vision and three different economic and land use scenarios for the future of transformation of the Fremantle | Walyalup Inner Harbour.

The emerging vision and scenarios are aspirational and explore different ideas and possibilities that could be achieved  across the precinct’s 50-year planning horizon following the relocation of port activities.

Feedback received on the scenarios will help inform the final recommendation the WA Government in mid-2024.

Connection to Country

Watch this series of videos to learn more about the site's spiritual significance and Dreaming narratives.

The Fremantle | Walyalup area is rich in Aboriginal history and holds great cultural importance to the Whadjuk Noongar people. Walyalup has spiritual significance for its connection to Dreaming narratives and its role as a place of trade, camping, meeting and funerary rites. The area is associated with the beginnings of many important Dreamtime stories between people, land, freshwater and the sea and has important songline connections.

Respecting and valuing Aboriginal culture and heritage is an important consideration for the Future of Fremantle project. The project provides opportunities to do this through sharing stories and truth-telling.

Over the past 12 months, considerable cultural and heritage information has been provided by the Future of Fremantle Planning Committee’s Aboriginal Reference Group, through Aboriginal Elders’ forums, Aboriginal Cultural Tours and through ongoing consultation support from project consultancy, Kambarang Services. This has resulted in Walyalup’s Aboriginal culture being an integral part of the three scenarios currently available for public comment.
